Exhausts
Most exhaust problems can be diagnosed by listening out for unfamiliar noises or with a visual check underneath the car. A vehicle which has a damaged or broken exhaust will automatically fail its MOT due to emissions. It can also fail if it produces too much noise which is an issue usually related to issues with the silencer.
There are a number of exhaust checks that can be done to see if there are any problems:
- Scrape away surface rust
- Check the supports
- Catalytic convertor problems
- Inspect joints and connections
- Exhaust leaks
- DPF
For diesel drivers, a DPF (Diesel Particle Filter) can become blocked
(symbolised by a warning light on the dash) which can cause a loss
of power, reduced fuel economy, poor throttle response and difficulty.
This will result in an MOT failure.
Driving with a broken exhaust is actually illegal!
